Is the meaning of "such a thing/such things" different from "a thing like that/things like that"?
Could you take a look at the following example?
Person A: He was prone to sudden emotional explosions in the office, like smashing a telephone to pieces against the wall.
Person B: That's awful. I had no idea he'd done things like that.
Can I say "such things" instead of "things like that"? Are those nuances different?

My son always acts up at school, for example, ----, ----, and ----.
Your son never does such things, right?

I had no idea he did things like that.
To be honest, I don't think there's a difference between the two expressions. To my ear, though, "things like that" sounds more natural in almost every situation.
> I had no idea he'd done things like that.
This is fine. "I had no idea he did things like that." is OK as well, but there was nothing wrong with it.
There is no difference in meaning. "Such things" sounds more British whereas "things like that" sounds more American. Both are fine though.

I think both are about the same meaning. Sometimes the construction "such things" lends itself better than "things like that." This is particularly true in negative constructions.

For example, a common expression is
(1a) "I've done no such thing"

This is equivalent to saying
(1b) "I have not done anything like that"
I like the former (1a) better because it is succinct. However, in the U.S., succinctness is not always the first priority. We don't mind using more words if we feel like it makes the sentence more digestible. My guess is many people would use the latter (1b). In practice, I would guess I am more likely to say the latter (1b), but I might think highly of someone's ability to express themselves clearly for using constructions such as the former (1a).
Additionally, there are expressions like this one:
(2a) "There's no such thing" which is often said even more simply as "No such thing"
This basically means
(2b) "It does not exist (nor does anything like it)"
but it doesn't really make sense to say the latter (2b).
Finally, another popular expression is
(3a) "No such luck"
Which is said when something which seems like it could have possibly worked out did not work out (often for some unknown or unclear reason.)
There is not really an equivalent way of saying this, but the meaning is approximately "I wasn't lucky in the particular way necessary."
Hope this helps!
> 理央,
Thank you for visiting my page and correcting.
There's no difference. I see. Thank you!

> CJK,
Oh, "such things" sounds more British. It was a bit unexpected for me, because I often use "such things" rather than "things like that."
Thank you for your explanation!

Wow! Thank you for detailed explanation!
"No such thing" and "no such luck." Those are new expressions for me. I'll try to using them.
>> succinctness is not always the first priority.
Hmm... It applies to Japanese language, too. (^.^)
Thank you!
"Such things" sounds a little fancier than "Things like that" Other than that, they mean exactly the same thing.
EroOyaji,
Oh, "such things" sounds a bit fancy. I see.
Thank you for your comment!
